We are seeking an ST/IT Crewmember for a high profile vessel with both Yachting and Research vessel focus.
ST/IT Crewmember
The function of the ST role is to install, maintain, integrate and operate the science, networking, audio/visual and satellite communications equipment onboard, to act as the liaison to science parties and to provide support to supernumeraries. This position is expected to require spending a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 8 months per year at sea, with a rotational schedule based on 3 months on/off. Flexibility is required due to no crew changes taking place during missions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental or Marine Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent degree
- Possess or have the ability to obtain STCW Basic Safety and Security Awareness certificates
- Possess or have the ability to obtain Medical Health Certificate with no restrictions as to serving as an officer
- Minimum of 5 years of oceanographic/marine technical experience at sea and/or ashore
- Computer skillset at systems administrator-level of knowledge and experience
- Prior experience working with oceanographic research systems at sea
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
Responsibilities
The Science Technology Officer’s duties include, but are not limited to:
- Act as onboard helpdesk, systems administrator and network engineer. In that role the ST will:
- Install and configure software and hardware for both science and ship operations
- Manage network servers, desktops, laptops, iPads and technology tools
- Set up and manage user accounts and access controls
- Monitor performance and maintain systems according to requirements and troubleshoot issues
- Ensure security and traffic management through access controls, backups and firewalls
- Upgrade systems with new software and hardware releases, including security updates
- Develop and implement protocols to train staff on new technologies
- Maintain technical documentation, manuals and IT policies
Act as onboard science responsible and laboratory technician. In that role, the ST will:
- Act as Science Liaison between ship's crew, science party and supernumeraries including participation in pre-cruise mission planning, daily briefings, and post-mission assessments. Also, act to ensure proper lab and oceanographic safety protocols are being followed by all personnel
- Operate and maintain various science systems, including:
- Kongsberg Multibeam Sonar including XBT Sound Velocity acquisition
- Simrad EK80 echosounder
- Knudsen sub-bottom profiler
- SeaBird and RBR CTD packages including hydrographic winch operation
- Navigational GPS and motion reference units
- Ultra-Short Baseline submersible tracking system
- Data Acquisition Systems
- Oversee proper use and maintenance of shipboard laboratory equipment
- Provide documentation of science equipment and activities, including cruise reports, data/technical issues, logs, staging data and metadata by cruise for science party and archive
- Work with shore side support team to monitor scientific hardware and software developments and take appropriate steps to provide modern and effective science capability
- Assist other ship departments as necessary, including work on deck and in small boats
Desired Skills and Knowledge
The successful candidate will have a broad scope of knowledge of the types of systems commonly found on research vessels, including scientific, ship navigation, communications, and IT/AV equipment. The following specific skills or experience are desired:
- Familiarity with various operating systems and platforms, including MacOS, Microsoft Windows, and Ubuntu Linux
- Experience with Microsoft Windows Server-based networking, including Active Directory/AzureAD, Exchange/Office365, DNS/DHCP, and File and Print Sharing
- Knowledge of system security (e.g. intrusion detection systems) and data backup/recovery
- Specific knowledge or related experience with the following technologies:
- Cisco networking equipment (LAN, WLAN, and WAN technologies)
- Dell PowerEdge Servers, Dell EMC storage arrays, and Dell Desktops and Laptops.
- Kaleidescape/Crestron-based entertainment systems
- Pelco/Mobotix CCTV systems
- C and Ku-band Cobham and Intellian VSAT systems, SeaTel and iDirect BDE equipment and Iridium communications systems
- Kerio Control Firewalls
- Panasonic PABX telephone systems
- MOXA Serial over IP systems
- Serial/UDP Data communication
- SCUBA diver certification from an accredited organization
- Experience piloting UAVs
It is essential that the candidate has a very good understanding of electronics and knows how to find necessary information about various system setups, configurations and to get relevant assistance when needed.
Remuneration:
- The remuneration will depend on experience and documented formal qualifications.
- Fixed Salary, paid 12 times per year.
- Social Security packages according to Vessel Flag Regulations.
